Best Houseplants for Beginners

Houseplants were my foot into the door of the gardening world. Once I got one, it wasn’t long before I had more plants than I had room. Now that I have had so many different kinds of houseplants, I know which ones are easiest to take care of and require the least amount of maintenance.

POTHOS

Pothos or Devils ivy is one of the easiest and fastest-growing houseplants you can find. It can thrive in almost any lighting and does not mind being neglected. It needs very little care and is an excellent choice if starting with houseplants. Pothos prefer a bright place, especially with pale leaves, but they can survive in a low light area with proper care. They also like a little mist every once in a while if your home is on the drier side.

ZZ PLANT

Zanzibar Gem or Zz plants are the hardiest plants I have had. These plants will thrive on little to not care at all. They grow fast if you keep them watered but don’t mind going without water for a while. Like Pothos, this plant enjoys bright light but can thrive in a low-light environment. ZZ plants are fast-growing and can grow as big as 3 ft tall in a big enough pot! I highly recommend this plant if you want to get into gardening but don’t have much experience.

SNAKE PLANT

Snake plants are fantastic to have in your house because they filter air! They are incredibly hardy and don’t require much care at all. Just like other houseplants, snake plants enjoy light but don’t need a lot of it to thrive. These plants are an excellent choice for a low-light environment. They are also easy to propagate, so you never have to pay for another one again once you get one.

SPIDER PLANT

Spider plants, also known as spider ivy, are excellent starting houseplants for beginners. These beauties are fast-growing and forgiving if you forget to water them from time to time. As long as you give them bright indirect light, they will flourish! When in the right environment, they flower and produce small baby spider plants that you can cut off and gift to your friends. This plant is a gift that keeps on giving.

IVY

There are so many kinds of ivy that it’s a no-brainer when getting into houseplants. It comes in a load of different colors, shapes, and sizes. Ivy is extremely hardy and grows like a weed. Most ivy species prefer bright light, but they can grow well in medium light. Ivy makes for a great decoration in any room! Just like Pothos, ivy is so so easy to propagate; take a cutting once it gets to be a good length, stick it in some water, and in no time, you’ll have a new plant ready to be potted up.
