Our Story
Audrey Hepburn once famously said, “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” At Back Forty Flowers, we embrace this sentiment wholeheartedly. We believe that planting a garden isn't just about creating beauty in the present; it's about investing in a better tomorrow. What better way to contribute to a brighter future than by spreading the joy of flowers?
Our journey began with a humble backyard garden tended by our flower farmer, Kayla. From those modest beginnings, our garden blossomed into what it is today. It was during Kayla's moments of self-care, practicing Reiki among the flowers, that she discovered something remarkable – the plants responded positively to the healing energy. Inspired by this connection, Kayla began infusing the garden with Reiki energy, nurturing it to thrive and flourish. Today, all our flowers are grown with this healing energy, which continues to radiate even after they are cut. We take pride in knowing that our flowers carry this healing energy into your homes, brightening your space and uplifting your spirits.
At Back Forty Flowers, we view flower growing and arranging as forms of self-care. Engaging with nature in this way allows the mind to settle and forces us to ground ourselves in the present moment. Our hope is to extend this mentality to everyone, fostering an environment where our community can thrive and find solace in the beauty of nature.
I'm Kayla, the flower grower behind Back Forty Flowers
Growing up, my days were spent playing in the woods, creating a magical world from what I found in nature. That stuck with me as I grew up, leaving me yearning to grow as much as possible! I just cannot get enough of watching things grow. You could say I am a little obsessed.
Reiki also plays a massive part in my life. I find the most peace and serenity when practicing Reiki in the garden. The natural world goes hand in hand with energy healing and, in my experience, amplifies the effect Reiki has on the body, mind, and spirit. Gardening and Reiki have helped me heal myself from the inside out and continue to be a self-care technique I use almost daily to combat stress, frustration, overwhelm, and pretty much anything else I am working through.
I'm Rachel, the florist (and occasionally day-of coordinator) behind Back Forty Flowers.
While I’ve always loved flowers, they didn’t peak my professional interest until I was working at a local wedding venue. Watching flowers bring so much life and beauty to an already stunning room felt so magical to me. That’s where my calling began.
(Ironically enough, I had taken a career test in college that matched me with florist as my #1 career. If only I’d paid attention to it then but hey - good things take time!)
There is something so healing about taking the beauty of nature and creating something with it. Even when we have no orders, I’ll create for myself. It’s a nice treat, sure - but I find myself at my most grounded when I’m working with flowers. Even after the most stressful day, it brings me back.
There really is healing power in flowers, and I’m so thankful to have a bestie who not only loves flowers as much as I do but loves to care for and cultivate them.
Our flowers are infused with love, both from Reiki and a general love for what we do.
