How i get out of a winter slump
If you are anything like me, you hit a point during winter when you feel stuck. You’ve been cooped up inside for a while now, and the lack of sunlight makes everything feel slightly gray. Gone is the feeling of cozy moments by the fire and now the cold starts making its way into your soul. Not to be dramatic, of course, but it truly feels like this feeling of stagnation will last forever. Every year I am surprised that winter gets to me as much as it does.
This year is no different; I have hit my winter slump. I was feeling so unmotivated with everything. I knew a laundry list of tasks would come with the beginning of spring, so prepping my mindset now was of the most importance to me. Step 1: Step into the sun
You don’t realize how much sunlight exposer helps your mental state until you lack it. Just like plants, your body absorbs sunlight and using it for energy. So in the winter when the days are short, you don’t always get as much sunlight as your body needs. This can cause you to feel sluggish and all around not have as much energy as you do in spring or summer.

Step 2: Move your body
A common place you’ll find me during winter is curled up in a blanket enjoying the coziness of a good book. However, that leaves my body feeling stiff and just not so good after a while.
A good stretch does wonders for my mind when I am feeling a bit down. Slight movement and stretching help release tension that might be stored in the body, making room for fresh energy to flow. Step 3: Refresh a small part of your space
I think the saying goes something like “ A cluttered home is the creation of a cluttered mind”. While I don’t completely agree with it, this does have some truth to it. If my workspace is overloaded with clutter, I have difficulty focusing on whatever I am trying to do.

Step 4: Do something small for someone else
Winter often feels isolating and a bit lonely at times. A small act of kindness can be just the trick to turning your mood around. Doing something small for someone else helps get your mind thinking outside yourself.

Step 5: Clear mental clutter
One of my favorite things to do when I am feeling a bit overwhelmed is to make a list of everything on my mind. It doesn’t matter how big or small the thing might be. If it is weighing on my mind, I write it down. Then, I’ll take the list and burn it. Getting the thoughts out on paper and physically burning them helps me let go of the mental blocks that are keeping me down. list
Step 6: Shift your focus to the positive
When you are in a slump, getting wrapped up in everything going wrong is easy. But by switching up your perspective, you might start noticing all the positives around you.
A simple way to start switching your mindset is to notice small joys and positive moments throughout your day actively. Maybe you got a front-row parking spot, or someone paid for your coffee this morning. Putting active effort into pointing out good things in your life retrains your brain to seek out positives naturally.
Small intentional actions add up to a significant impact. Start with a few simple steps, and you’ll feel better quickly.
